I was 19 when we recorded and put out "The Red Album" in 1999.

Starstuck with the fact we were in the famed Seattle-based producer Conrad Uno's Egg Studio (of Presidents Of The United States Of America fame), we recorded the songs over Christmas break. Do you see a theme here from every album? Yep, that was always a good chunk of time off of work/school and time to make the rock!

Listening back to this album is interesting for me because it's the first set of songs in my catalog where I can hear a musical identity growing in theme from song-to-song; I can hear roots growing as to what my ear still to this day finds appealing musically and songwriting wise. Sure there are the stylistic ventures to the edge like the Dave Matthews-y "Solomon" but some rockers as well that I really enjoy like "Halo", and "Battery".

Lyrically, it was a transitionary time for me in my life; I was in in community college (and not loving it), started living on my own for the first time, and in my first serious relationship. Lots was going on personally in the change department, and I can hear that lyrically though pretty scattered throughout. It was a transitionary time for me, and I think the music and the subject matter reflect that.

As I get older and as these albums get further in my rearview mirror, I treasure them more as a sort of diary of my life put to song. With whatever song I record, I remember where I was, and how I was feeling when I recorded it. The studio is like a bookmark for me in memory, no matter how I might feel I've grown as a songwriter or performer, you always have your early albums to remind you where you came from and who you were, and still are.

We all need reminding of that from time to time...I know I do.
